It was discovered at Marsha's vet visit to have her teeth taken care of, that due to the lack of care, plain and simple neglect, the bacteria from her teeth has cause a mild infection around her heart. She now has a very serious heart murmur and some damage to the "sac" around the heart. Antibiotics and blood pressure medication have been prescribed to help her. Dr. feels like we may be able to wean her off the blood pressure medication in time, IF we can get the extra 5#'s off her. Obesity kills people, it also kills dogs. Letting your dog become obese takes years off it's life. It is SO important to keep your toy dog's teeth cleaned regularly at the vet, if you are unable to keep them clean yourself at home. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Marsha has been returned to us after 3 yrs, as her elderly adopter was put into assisted living and there were no pets allowed. Her senior sister, who originally facilitated the adoption, didn't want to take on another dog. Poor Marsha has been overfed table scraps and canned food, and the once healthy 5# Chihuahua we placed has come back to us at 10#s with rotten teeth!! We have scheduled a dental for her asap and will get her back on a regular, healthy diet of small breed hard kibble. This is so heartbreaking for us to have to go through repeatedly. IF you are someone looking to provide your elderly family member with a pet for company, but are not able or willing to make sure said pet gets regular, yearly veterinary care, please reconsider! It's not fair to these senior pets to go out to homes, where they are loved, sure, but not cared for properly, and then they get dumped back here when things get inconvienent. We think all seniors, pets and people, should be cared for and have love, but not at the expense of one or the other's health. It costs a considerable amount of money to properly feed, and care for a toy breed dog. They should NOT eat canned food, or table scraps, and they MUST have yearly dental cleanings after age 6. The better quality kibble you feed, this might be able to be adjusted to every other year. Keep this in mind when considering a toy breed.
